Alpha Pi Omega Sorority

First Greek-Letter Organization for American Indians, was founded in 1994 at UNC Chapel Hill by four members of the Lumbee Tribe.  Shannon Brayboy, Jamie R. Goins, Amy L. Locklear, and Christina D. Strickland .   Today, the Sorority has over 250 members and chapters in North Carolina, Arizona, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, and New Hampshire.  There are over 50 tribes represented among its Sisters.

Robert D. Deese, Activity Chief Information Officer

First Lumbee Indian to be assigned to direct Presidential Service.  Mr. Deese arrived at Camp David January 10, 1997 as part of a detachment from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion three (NMCB3) as a Builder 3rd Class (E4).  After his seven month deployment was over he took orders to be permanently stationed at Camp David.  Mr. Deese was part of the Readiness and Electronic Security Department.  His responsibilities included personal protection of the President and First Family.

Erica Nicole Dellinger, Miss Lumbee 2005

First to capture all four Lumbee Pageant titles. 

Don Dallas Jacobs, P.E., P.L.S.

First Lumbee Indian to obtain his Professional Engineering License in Civil Engineering (P.E.) & Professional Land Surveyor's License simultaneously.  Today, he operates & owns Jacob's Engineering & Surveying, a small company located in the heart of Pembroke.

Cory Lowry

First Lumbee Indian to win the First Robeson County Cross Country Championship.

Shelly Strickland

First Lumbee Indian to receive the Park Scholarship, a full academic scholarship to attend North Carolina State University - August 2000

Mitchell Locklear

The first Lumbee Indian to win the Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon.  His time was 3::18:22 which qualified him to run in this and next years race - February 2004

Lorna McNeill

The first Lumbee Indian be Miss North Carolina - 2000 Topsail Island Miss America Non-finalist Talent Winner

Judge Dexter Brooks (deceased March 6, 2002)

The first Lumbee Indian to serve as a  Superior Court Judge in Robeson County in 1998.

Jo Ann Smith Locklear  (Retired 07/03)

First Lumbee Indian Clerk of Superior Court and the first Lumbee to win a county wide election.  Won Primary election May 1994 with no opposition in November General Election.

Sheriff Glenn Maynor

First Lumbee Indian Sheriff in Robeson County - 1994  (Retired 2005)

Leon Jacobs

 The first Lumbee Indian to receive the Jay Silverheels Achievement Award by the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development.  This is the highest award given by the Center for American Indian Enterprise Development to an individual for economic development achievement.  The award was presented recently to Mr. Jacobs at the NCAIED Annual Banquet in Los Angels, California.

The first Lumbee Indian to   receive an invitation to the White House by President Bush  to join him for  a Conference on Missing, Exploited, and Runaway Children on Wednesday, October 2, 2002.

Errol Oxendine, RN

The first Lumbee Indian  to be selected as NC Nursing Student of the Year 2000.

Admiral Michael Holmes

The first Lumbee Indian to become an Admiral in the military and currently the highest rank ed.   Lt. Col Brenda Finnicum would like to know if any other Lumbee achieved a higher rank.

Kelvin Sampson
The first Lumbee Indian to be awarded the Jim Thorpe Sports Award.

April Whittemore

The first Lumbee Indian to be Head Dancer at the First Inaugural Native American Celebration scheduled for September 14th and 15th, 2002 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  and the first Lumbee Indian to win Miss Indian World in 1998.
